One on One with Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels

Every January, Indiana’s governor addresses a joint session of the General Assembly and a statewide television and radio audience. He provides an overview of the preceding year and spells out his goal for that legislative session and the year ahead. On Tuesday, Governor Mitch Daniels delivered his sixth State of the State address. He said Indiana should be pleased that we’re in much better shape than most other states. As the week came to a close, he talked to Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Marianne Holland about the ideas he wanted to convey, and what’s happened to one of his proposals since it was revealed Tuesday night. In his sixth state of the state address, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels advised Hoosiers that spending vigilance and government reform during the current recession was necessary to position the state for growth in the future. Governor Uses State of the State to Sell Property Tax Plan

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels delivered his fourth State of the State address Tuesday night.  He used the speech to continue promoting his property tax relief plan and note his accomplishments as Indiana’s forty-ninth governor. Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Marianne Holland reports.

Daniels To Deliver State of the State Tonight

Tonight Governor Mitch Daniels will deliver his fourth State of the State Address.  The governor says his speech will be brief and to the point, emphasizing his property tax plan now under consideration by the Indiana General Assembly.  Many lawmakers see the speech as Daniels’ chance to sell his version of property tax relief.  Among them is Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Bob Meeks from LaGrange. 

Daniels’ plan includes eliminating township assessors in favor of a single, appointed assessor in each county.  It also proposed property tax caps and a sales tax increase to offset property tax cuts.  The governor will also give testimony on his plan before the House Ways and Means Committeee Wednesday.

Daniels to Testify at Statehouse, Deliver State of the State

This week members of the Indiana General Assembly return to the statehouse to continue the short session.  Property taxes continue to be the focus of many committee hearings.  Also, Governor Mitch Daniels will play a very public role at the statehouse this week. He’ll deliver his State of the State address Tuesday and give his first ever legislative committee testimony on Wednesday.  Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Marianne Holland reports.
