Bill to Collect Gambling Winnings from People Who Owe Child Support Advances

A bill to collect gambling winnings from parents who owe back child support has been approved by a state senate committee and is now headed to the full senate for consideration. The legislation, if it becomes law, would require casinos to collect money from anyone who wins more than 12 hundred dollars at a single slot machine and owes back child support. Senator Travis Holdman voted for the bill, but says that provision doesn’t go far enough and the bill should collect on every dollar someone wins at a casino. Indiana Gaming Commissioner Ernie Yelton says the bill doesn’t include people who win money at separate slot machines and games, even if the separate winnings total 12 hundred dollars. He says with the millions of people who visit Indiana’s 13 casinos, tracking every winning would be impossible. Yelton adds that the single slot machine winning triggers a form casinos are required to file with the Internal Revenue Service. He says about four hundred thousand of those forms are filed a year, but there’s no way to know how many currently pertain to people who owe child support.
