Today at the Indiana Statehouse: Sexting

January 25, 2010

Today, lawmakers at the Indiana statehouse will take up the issue of sexting. Commonly defined as sending sexually explicit messages or photos electronically, it’s usually sent between mobile phones. Indiana State Representative Sandy Blanton is the author of bill. She says sexting is a character issue and schools should be the first to address the problem.

“You can’t control everything or everybody but asking the schools to take the lead in controlling this on school property by either banning cell phones or some other method.”

Blanton says she plans to make changes to the bill that will more cleary define exactly what constitutes sexting. The bill will also set penalties for sending explicit text messages on school property versus on other public or private property.
