Senate Shuts Down Due to Snow

January 7, 2010

The Senate cancelled its Thursday session because of the snowstorm that has blanketed Indiana. Senate majority communications director Scott Minier says senators from northern Indiana were concerned about the heavier snowfall in their districts. Since the legislature met last month he says they are ahead of schedule for the big items being considered during this short session. Spokesperson for the House democrats, Jeff Fites says chambers make decisions independently on a case by case basis and the house is in session. Ed Terrell at the National Weather Service says northern counties may have close to a foot of snow in areas like La Porte that are subject to heavier lake effect snows. The overnight storm has dropped 4 to 5 inches in the central part of the state and western counties such as Vermillion are seeing about an inch more than that. Legislators and the rest of us face bitter cold wind chills well below zero over the weekend. Both House and Senate are set to reconvene on Monday.
