Republicans Say No To Guantanamo Detainees

February 3, 2009

A group of General Assembly Republicans have introduced a resolution they say would urge the Obama administration not to place Guantanamo Bay detainees in Indiana’s federal prison. Terre Haute is home to the United States Penitentiary, a high security prison that contains a unit for those serving federal death sentences. Senator Marlin Stutzman of Howe says he believes its status could also make a location that would get serious consideration for relocating Gitmo detainees.

“Terre Haute prison is a default location for those who do not have a death row facility and that’s why I would believe that Terre Haute would be high on that list as a possible location for these detainees to be moved to Indiana.

Stutzman says concerns over repeat offenders from Guantanamo make the risk of having detainees in Indiana too great. The resolution is scheduled for a committee hearing next Wednesday in the Senate. No Indiana Democrats have signed onto the resolution thus far. Facilities in South Carolina, Kansas, California and Colorado are other possible locations for the reassignment of detainees.
