Law Sought on Preventing Lies in Campaign Ads

February 3, 2009

A Lafayette area lawmaker wants to prevent personal attacks in future political campaigns. State Representative Randy Truitt’s bill would penalize a candidate who knowingly engages in false, negative attacks on an opponent’s character. The first-term Republican says running for office already takes a lot of time and effort. He thinks any inappropriate behavior by another candidate or political party detracts from the process and prevents good people from running. Truitt says he was the target of false political ads during his run for the 26th District last year, and it also was a problem for the candidates during the two previous campaigns. The measure was assigned to the House Elections and Apportionment Committee. No hearing has been set yet.
