Legislator Introduces Green Jobs Plan

January 8, 2009

Senator Sue Errington of Muncie says she’s introducing legislation dubbed the Green Jobs Development Act that seeks to create jobs by implementing tougher renewable energy standards and updating commercial building codes. The package of bills includes a renewable electricity standard requiring utility companies to offer a portion of the electricity they sell from renewable energy sources. The plan also calls for net metering regulations, allowing homeowners who generate their own electricity to get credit on their bills when they send power pack to the electric grid. Errington says the green jobs act also includes a bill that would update standards for constructing new commercial buildings, to make them more energy efficient.

“It signals that you’re serious about renewable energy. And it signals that to manufacturers of wind turbines and other kinds of renewables and those are the kinds of jobs of the future.”

Errington says the energy efficiency building code bill has been assigned to the Senate Energy and Environmental Affairs Committee. The renewable energy standard and net metering legislation is headed to the Senate Utilities and Technology Committee.
