Daniels Says Lawmakers Close to Property Tax Deal

March 12, 2008

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels says lawmakers are getting close to a final agreement on property tax restructuring.  Speaking to a crowd outside his office at the Statehouse Tuesday, Daniels said he believes compromise can be reached by the session’s end Friday.

The crowd was made up of dozens of taxpayers from Delaware County, which includes the city of Muncie, and lobbyists for the Indiana Association of Realtors.  The group from Delaware County was calling on the legislature to pass permanent property tax caps and eventually, eliminate property taxes altogether.  Lobbyists for the realtors’ association say their asking for the elimination of all township assessors, rather than the retention of those in townships with more than 15 thousand parcels.
